The RV-4 was designed by Richard Van Grunsven in the mid 1970's and first flew in 1979. Contrary to popular belief the RV-4 is a new design to its predecessor (the RV-3) with a new wing, larger wingspan and sport aerobatic capability. A proven two seat tourer with conventional (tail dragger) configuration, the type is still popular amongst the more 'hard-core' Van's fans, representing the original design that arguably propelled the company to its current-day success.
