When Piper decided to compete in the four-seat retractable market, the intention was to take customers from Mooney, who at the time, had the lions share. The base price in 1967 - was USD$16,900; inexpensive in comparison. The aircraft offered more space inside and a 'foolproof' electromechanical gear, which insurers loved; a perfect stepping-stone from their fixed gear / pitch PA-28 models.
